EMERGENCY APPEAL TO SUPPORT PEOPLE AFFECTED BY PUSHBACKS IN TURKEY

In February we saw an over two-fold increase in pushbacks from Greece or Bulgaria to Turkey. This has led to a significant increase in our expenses and costs that cover the needs of those suffering at the hands of the European border regime.

Our costs are predominantly covering short- term accommodation, medical expenses, food and clothing for people who have been pushed back from Greece and Bulgaria.

Why are these donations so important? Read below!

25 € will provide food for a family of four for a whole month. Most people we provide support to,  including minors, have been deprived of food and water at the hands of EU member state authorities for several days. When they are returned to Turkey, they have no income and no money left. It is critical to their survival and health that we provide them with food.

20 € will cover the cost of accommodation for one person for a week. At the border in Edirne, we have partnered with several hostels to provide short- term accommodation for the people to provide a safe space for them to recover and figure out their next moves. The hostels we have established partnerships with are now so full due to the increase of people needing accommodation after pushbacks, that we need to partner up with more which will require more funds.

10 € will provide new clothes to people without adequate clothing. During pushbacks, most people have their belongings and clothes stole from them by authorities. They often arrive with barely any clothing, sometimes even completely naked. The large majority arrives without shoes and freezing cold because they had been forced into the Evros/Meriç river. Your donations will allow us to provide much needed clothing to people who need it most.

55 € covers the average cost of care at a medical clinic for someone with severe injuries inflicted during a pushback. The most common injuries we see are bruises, lacerations, broken and bruised bones, concussions and dog bites. We have also often seen injuries from electric discharge weapons like tasers. Your donations will allow us to keep providing first aid and get people with more severe injuries the medical attention they so urgently need.
